Household Products to use for Mattress Cleaning

Household Products to Use for Mattress Cleaning

You finally bought a memory foam mattress, or maybe you have been sleeping on one for years. Have you thought about how to keep it clean? While mattresses may not be the first thing you think about cleaning seasonally, being that you wash and change your bedding and you are always clean when you go to bed, they do need to be cleaned and are really quite simple to clean. Most mattress cleaning solutions can even be made at home, using items that you already have in the house. Keeping your mattress clean will help prolong the life of your mattress and will maintain a cleaner sleep space by doing so. Below are some common household products we recommend you use when cleaning your mattress.

Laundry Detergent

A simple mattress cleaning solution can be made from mixing laundry detergent with water. To create this solution, combine a splash of laundry detergent with water and mix it in a spray bottle until the solution is completely blended. Now that the laundry detergent is diluted, you can spray your mattress from top to bottom for a fresh cleanse. Any brand of laundry detergent should be effective, but one with added stain fighters may be more helpful if your mattress is showing deeper stains. While we don’t suggest saturating your mattress in a box with any cleaning solution, this DIY solution performs well for general cleaning and routine mattress maintenance.

Vinegar

For tougher and smellier stains, add vinegar to your DIY laundry detergent and water mix. Create a mixture of two parts water, one part vinegar and a splash of laundry detergent, let the solution soak into stains and then blot the area. By adding vinegar to a DIY mattress cleaner, you will have your mattress smelling and looking better in no time.

Ready-To-Use Stain Removers

If you want something stronger than a DIY mattress cleaner, or maybe you’re just not into making your own, you can opt for store bought, ready-to-use stain removers created by trusted brands.

OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover is a great stain remover powder that needs to be mixed with water. Because this stain remover is more concentrated, we suggest using it in moderation with a clean towel to blot out stains. We never suggest removing the mattress cover from your BedInABox® or washing it in a washing machine in order to prevent damage to the technologies and soft-knit materials we use in your mattress cover.

Another option for a ready-to-use stain remover is the Resolve Liquid Mattress Cleaner & Spray. Resolve is known for their stain removal products, and this one in particular is specifically designed for mattresses. This product is highly rated on various online retailers and is extremely affordable, generally running $4.99 for a 22oz bottle. While this stain remover is designed for mattresses, we still suggest spot cleaning only with this product.

Powdered Cleaners and Deodorizers

Powdered cleaners and deodorizers are actually one of the best ways to clean and freshen up your BedInABox®. Too much liquid can harm your memory foam mattress, whether the liquid be a cleaning solution or a spill, because excess liquid will seep into the foam and, if not dried properly, can lead to mold or mildew. An easy, affordable DIY mattress deodorizer can be created with 1 cup of baking soda and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (we always recommend lavender for its calming qualities). Sprinkle the surface of your mattress with this solution, let it sit for several hours, and vacuum any excess. The baking soda will help absorb any moisture and odor in your mattress while the essential oils will keep it smelling fresh and clean.

Use A Mattress Protector

While they don’t fall under the category of a cleaning product, mattress protectors are a great way to keep your beds cleaner. Mattress protectors create a barrier between your mattress and the daily wear and tear it sees to help prevent build up from dust, dirt and spills. The BedInABox® Tencel™ Protector is a five-star reviewed mattress protector that provides a soft, breathable barrier against liquid, allergens, bacteria and dust mites. The BedInABox® Cooling Protector is another fan favorite that provides an extra layer of cooling comfort while still shielding your mattress from spills and accidents.

BedInABox® memory foam and hybrid mattresses are designed to last for ten+ years, but they do require some routine cleaning to maintain that lifespan. Grab a vacuum and go over the surface of your mattress from time to time. Spot treat stains as spills and accidents occur. Top your mattress with a protector if you don’t already. By using any of the suggested cleaning methods or solutions, you will better maintain the quality of your mattress which will ensure many years of high-quality sleep.
