Eco-Lux™: Our Awesome Sustainability Story
Concerned about how environmentally-friendly your current mattress investment is? Worried about where your mattress was made and who made it? BedInABox® is here to help.
As a business that genuinely wants to make a positive impact and develop our corporate social responsibility initiatives, we at BedInABox® carefully consider our ecological footprint and any sustainability-related policies intended to provide affordable, non-toxic and long-lasting mattress products to our customers. Our natural products and sustainable practices will offer you peace of mind without compromising your values or comfort.
Our goal at BedInABox® is to be conscientious of not only the sleeper, but also the environment. We strive to be as ecologically efficient as possible in our mattress manufacturing processes and marketing practices. We want to reduce the disposal of mattresses in landfills, in efforts to scale down the amount of lasting waste, as well.
Our methods toward achieving these goals of sustainability, high-quality comfort, environmentally conscious practices and global reforestation are to think renewably, resource cleanly, partner wisely and remain conscientious of the environment in our advances toward the future.
One of our best examples of innovative, renewable thinking is our Eco-Lux™ mattress model. The Eco-Lux™ mattress is constructed only with foam that meets the USDA BioPreferred Certification. Our Eco-Lux™ mattress is the ONLY memory foam with this designation.
The goal of the Bio-Preferred Program, managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is to increase the purchase and use of biobased products. Biobased products are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials and provide an alternative to conventional petroleum derived products. Bio-Preferred is both a component certification and an overall certification. Thus, with the USDA BioPreferred Certification, BedInABox® can assure you that all foam we use is Bio-Preferred AND the Eco-Lux™ bed as a whole is USDA Bio-Preferred certified.
Not to mention, all of our mattresses are made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam. This means our mattress foam is free from harmful products, low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and has very little off-gassing odor.
CertiPUR-US® is a certification program administered by a not-for-profit organization. According to their informational website, CertiPUR-US® certified foams are:
✓ Made without ozone depleters
✓ Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
✓ Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
✓ Made without formaldehyde
✓ Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
✓ Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
Without any doubt, the BedInABox® family understands that our customers want the products they bring into their home to be made without any such substances that could be harmful in content or high in emissions. This is why we’ve made it such a priority to guarantee that all mattresses in our product line hold this CertiPUR-US® certification - to ensure our sleepers countless nights of safe, supportive sleep.
Our Eco-Lux mattress also holds the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification. We are proud to be accredited by OEKO-TEX, and to guarantee that no harmful materials are present in any component – both the cover and the foam - of the Eco-Lux™ mattress. The Eco-Lux™ is 11" of plush memory foam made with 34% renewable materials, and features an organic cotton cover that is soft, breathable, and moisture wicking. This highly certified, eco-friendly mattress is truly our greatest blend of renewable and luxury. Produced from natural materials and manufactured sustainably, it’s perfectly safe for all sleepers and is available in either queen or king sizes, starting at only $1,299.00.
Not only have we introduced deluxe eco-friendly mattresses to our product line, but we have also partnered with One Tree Planted, a 501(c)3 non-profit environmental organization based in Vermont that focuses on global reforestation. Through their One For One Program model, One Tree Planted plants one tree for every BedInABox® mattress sold! BedInABox® donates a percentage of every sale to One Tree Planted’s global reforestation projects in order to plant these trees worldwide.
At BedInABox®, we also want to do our part to reduce the disposal of mattresses in landfills. We wholeheartedly stand behind the importance of considering the environmental impacts of mattress recycling versus mattress disposal. Several of the known environmental benefits of recycling include:
- Extended landfill life
- Reduced pollution associated with extraction of virgin materials
- Spared resources for future use
By recycling your old mattress, you are converting it from waste into new, useful products. A program that orchestrates mattress recycling in several states is the ByeByeMattress program. The goal of this program is to collect and deconstruct old mattresses and box springs to later repurpose them, versus the alternative – incinerating them as waste products. The ByeByeMattress initiative is overseen by the Mattress Recycling Council® (MRC), the consumer-facing identity for a nonprofit organization responsible for collecting and recycling discarded mattresses and box springs in various states through statewide collection and recycling networks. The program operates and is administered through funding via visible costs to consumers - in Connecticut, for example, a Recycling Fee set by the state is $9.00 - and other purchasers of products sold in the state. This fee is specific to each state’s recycling program, and ultimately funds the ByeByeMattress operation.
As you can see, BedInABox® is the future of the bedding industry - our mattresses are made with care, and are designed to respond intelligently to both the environment and the people sleeping on them. We try to do our part by considering our environmental impact and being conscious about the nature of our materials, both in production and disposal. Now it’s time to do your part by investing in affordable, more sustainable sleep with our Eco-Lux™. Not only is the Eco-Lux™ produced responsibly with renewable, plant-derived ingredients, but is also worth the value of a newly planted tree.
