2022 Year in Review - Boxed Mattress Wars
The mattress industry gets more and more competitive each year as new brands enter the market and existing brands continue to enhance their product selection. According to the latest information, there are nearly 200 companies in the mattress in a box industry as of 2022. As technology continues to play an integral part in everyday life, the days of purchasing a mattress at a brick-and-mortar store are in the rearview mirror. In fact, over 50% of shoppers say that they would prefer to buy their mattress online instead of in a store. Customers continue to prioritize the convenience of being able to purchase a mattress online and have it shipped to their homes. Life in the wake of the pandemic continues to be unpredictable, but one thing is for certain, the intensity of the boxed mattress war is only going to grow. 2020 left us reeling with a global pandemic that led to supply chain and fulfillment issues as well as a buying panic. In 2022, with a recession in sight, we know that companies are going to have to stand out even more to keep buyers interested.
In 2022, BedInABox® continues to innovate and bring new and exciting products into the market. Some mattress companies, on the other hand, have not been able to keep up with the ever-changing industry and customer needs. With everything going on, we put an overview together to highlight the mattress industry's performance in 2022, as well as share new and exciting news from the BedInABox® team.
Mattress Industry Overview
There are a lot of exciting things happening in the mattress industry in 2022!
New Jobs
2020 saw a huge number of layoffs and unemployment. In the past few years, jobs have been coming back. In 2022, employment in the mattress industry is booming. This year, the mattress industry in the US is employing over 75,000 people with a majority of them holding manufacturing jobs. More manufacturing jobs means more production, so more products will be available to consumers. The mattress manufacturing space saw a 4% employment growth compared to 2021. Most mattress companies now employ an average of 50-100 people.
New Laws
As the industry grows, lawmakers want to make sure that consumers are protected. US federal law now requires that all mattresses sold in the US be flame-proof. This means that mattresses must be able to withstand an open flame with minimal burning and charring.
Increased Focus on Recycling
In 2022, the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) proudly announced that they recycled their 10 millionth mattress. Their statewide programs across California, Connecticut and Rhode Island have allowed them to keep nearly 400 million pounds of wood, steel, fabric, and foam out of landfills by recycling them into new products. Recycling mattresses is crucial to helping protect the environment, and the hard work done by organizations like the MRC is making a huge impact.
