Deciding on a Mattress for an Airbnb, VRBO or Guest Space

As someone who hosts guests regularly or owns a vacation rental, the last thing you want is a guest who is unhappy during their stay. Creating the perfect home away from home isn’t only about wall décor and aesthetics, everything in your short-term rental or guest space should say, “you are welcome here, come on in!” Your space could have games or complimentary treats; however, nothing creates a perfect stay like a good night’s sleep. Keep reading for a comprehensive on how to choose the best mattress for your guest space or short term rental.

Understanding Guest Needs: Balancing Firmness and Support

Clinical studies show a correlation between medium-firm mattresses and better sleep. A medium to firm mattress can promote comfort, relieve chronic back pain, and improve sleep quality. At BedInABox®, we aim for that perfect balance of firmness and support. In fact, we offer mattresses with levels of firmness ranging from medium-soft to firm. Our Tranquillium® mattress offers the firmest feel, which is great for maximizing support for your spine and joints. Our Azul® mattress falls under the medium-soft level of firmness, providing the perfect amount of body-hugging support with additional cooling technology.

Size and Space Considerations

First, consider the size of your guest space and who will generally be staying there. Are you hosting out-of-town family and friends? Does your short term rental property mostly attract families? Couples? Friends? Bachelorette parties? Your guest profile and the size of your space will largely determine what size mattresses you should furnish your sleep quarters with. Please refer to the BedInABox® Mattress Size Guide for the heights, widths, and lengths of every BedInABox® mattress size. Please note that each mattress size corresponds with a recommended room size, noted under the size specifications.

Space-Saving Solutions for Small Guest Rooms

All things considered, if your guest room is fairly small, a twin size mattress or a full size mattress may make the most sense so guests can comfortably live in the space for the length of their stay. To maximize a small bedroom space, we also suggest using bed frames with underbed storage versus filling the space with dressers and wardrobes. You can store down low but you can also store up high. Floating shelves can house books, décor, plants, and more without taking up valuable living space.

Durability for Frequent Usage

Most memory foam mattresses last between 7 to 10 years depending on how well they are maintained. Longevity also depends on frequency of use, whether it has been protected by a mattress protector or has been paired with an appropriate foundation, among other factors. BedInABox® mattresses are built to last with high-quality, CertiPUR-US® certified, American-made memory foams making them a top solution for frequently used sleep spaces. Our mattresses are also backed by a 20-year warranty to ensure lasting sleep quality.

The Case for Memory Foam in Guest Spaces

One-third of mattresses sold in the United States are memory foam mattresses. Since memory foam is engineered to conform to the body, it helps reduce pressure on the spine better than spring mattresses generally do, allowing more even body weight distribution for better alignment during sleep. Long-term use of memory foam has also been shown to reduce chronic back and neck pain and can even help with respiratory problems, leading to overall healthier sleep.

Hypoallergenic Materials for Guest Safety

Memory foam is naturally hypoallergenic because the density of the foam helps to minimize dust mites and other microbes from nesting in your mattress. BedInABox® also offers hypoallergenic sleep accessories to pair with your mattress, including a hypoallergenic weighted blanket and hypoallergenic mattress protectors.

Ease of Maintenance and Care

BedInABox® offers the easiest solution for maintenance and care of your mattress. If you have a steady rotation of guests, a mattress protector will be your best friend. It protects your BedInABox® mattress from spills, crumbs and other dirt your guests bring with them. Pairing your mattress with a BedInABox® mattress protector will not only protect your mattress, but will alo contribute to the overall longevity of your mattress over time. Check out our best-selling BedInABox® Tencel™ Protector or our new Mattress Encasement for the easiest way to keep your mattress looking and feeling brand new.

Even with the added layer of protection from a mattress protector, you should still periodically clean your memory foam mattress. For surface level debris, gently vacuum your mattress. For small stains, we always suggest spot cleaning. Please refer to our Mattress Cleaning Guide for more information on cleaning solutions and disinfectant tips.

Hybrid Mattresses: The Best of Both Worlds?

Perhaps you’re not convinced that memory foam is for everyone. Don’t fret: BedInABox® offers two hybrid mattresses to bridge the gap between innerspring and foam mattresses. The Original Hybrid contains a unique blend of BedInABox® memory foam layers and a layer of pocket coils. This construction gives the memory foam feel with the bounce of an innerspring mattress from the pocket coiles. Our BedInABox® Dual Hybrid® mattress is our most advanced mattress construction featuring layers of memory foam, pocket coils and a bonus layer of micro coils.

Enhancing Mattress Performance with the Right Foundation

A mattress is only as good as its foundation. A base helps to distribute weight evenly, protecting the mattress from extra duress and sagging. A foundation will greatly improve the longevity and durability of your mattress. From a sanitation perspective, a foundation lifts the mattress off the ground, providing height and protecting it from unwelcome pests, dust, and bacteria. Good sleep starts with the foundation, and BedInABox® has you covered with our Clever Connect™ Foundation, Platform BedInABox®, MotionInABox™ 1.0 and MotionInABox™ 2.0.

Accessorizing Your Guest Mattress

Top your guest mattress with a set of our Bamboo Sheets for cool, hypoallergenic sleep night after night. One of our newest products, the SlumberShield® weighted blanket is also designed for luxurious relaxation. Paired with a BedInABox® mattress, your guests will be lulled to sleep under the weight of this cozy blanket. If sanitation and cleanliness are a top priority, top your mattress with our Copper Topper. The real copper in our Memory Lux® Copper foam naturally fights germs, repels allergens and common bacteria and prevents odor or allergen build up on the mattress.

Compliance with Safety and Hygiene Standards

As an owner of an Airbnb or short–term rental, it is important to know the ground rules for hosts. They require listings to be clean and free of health hazards before each guest check-in, specifically:

  • Health and safety: Listings should be free of health hazards (mold, pests, etc.).
  • Cleanliness: Hosts should provide listings that meet a high standard of cleanliness (free of extensive dust, pet dander, dirty dishes, etc.).
  • Guest turnover: Hosts should be sure to clean between every stay (do laundry, take out trash, vacuum/sweep, wipe down surfaces, etc.).

For the mattress specifically, wash all bedding, including the mattress protector. Use the BedInABox® Mattress Cleaning Guide for our best suggestions on how to clean and disinfect the mattress between every booking. Doing this regularly will deter dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens from settling on your mattress. This will also maintain the shape and condition of the mattress from regular wear and tear.

Weighing Long-Term Benefits vs. Initial Costs

You want your guest to have a great stay whether you’re a rental owner or host in your own home. It can be stressful trying to make the right decision for others. At BedInABox® we put the customer first at every step of the process. We choose to make our own foam because we know that our customers look for that quality of comfort. We encourage our customers to reach out to us with questions because their sleep experience is what matters most. If higher quality, time-tested comfort backed by a generous sleep trial and warranty policy are what you’re looking for, BedInABox® mattresses are likely the right investment for you!

Feedback and Reviews: Learning from Guest Experiences

As a short-term rental owner, receiving constructive feedback is important for the success of your business. Airbnb encourages guests to provide feedback on their stays so hosts know what needs improving. BedInABox® also takes the feedback from our customers very seriously and uses it to improve our products and processes and to keep innovating.
