When is it Time to Buy a New Mattress?

If you are trying to determine whether you need to replace your mattress, chances are it’s probably time to buy a new one. Although your mattress was likely designed to last anywhere between 5 and 20 years, daily wear and tear eventually takes its toll even on expensive, high-end memory foam. As your mattress ages it naturally starts to deteriorate. It may start to sag and even become dirty. No matter how well made your mattress is, it will eventually begin to break down and could even become uncomfortable to sleep on. Continue reading for some of the top indicators that you definitely need a new mattress.

Sagging, Indentations, and Lumps

Probably the most obvious sign that your mattress should be replaced, sagging or the presence of indentations is a highly visible and uncomfortable indication of a worn-out mattress. All mattresses eventually sag no matter what materials they are constructed with. They also develop indentations in the spots you sleep most frequently. The springs in inner spring coil mattresses break down, latex foam compresses, and memory foam begins to soften. Even Purple’s elastic polymer mattresses sag eventually. If your mattress is sagging or has indentations, it’s time to buy a new mattress.

In addition to sagging, your mattress might feel lumpy. Lumps form as the padding inside of a mattress moves gradually over time. Lumps are a fairly common occurrence in lower quality mattresses, but can also form in high end mattresses that have deteriorated. Lumps are another sure sign that you need to buy a new mattress.

Discomfort

It is well known that mattresses become less comfortable as they age and deteriorate. As previously mentioned, all mattresses eventually sag and get indentations. What you may not realize is that a sag or an indentation means that the mattress has lost some of its ability to support you. In turn, the loss of support will bring discomfort when trying to sleep. Similarly, mattress lumps result in inconsistent support across the mattress. This means that you have less support than you should in some places, and too much uncomfortable pressure where there are lumps.

Poor Sleep Quality

If you have trouble falling asleep or find yourself regularly waking up in the middle of the night to adjust sleep positions, it is probably time to buy a new mattress. Sagging and lumpiness in old mattresses can cause you to toss and turn or wake up tired with body aches. While pairing your mattress with an adjustable bed can generally improve both your level of comfort and your sleep quality by allowing you to control the position of your bed, keep in mind that any aging mattress can contribute to this uncomfortably low quality of sleep.

Dirt, Dander, Dust, and Dust Mites

Let’s face it, it’s a laborious and time-consuming task to clean a mattress. Cleaning a mattress can require washing the sheets and mattress covers, vacuuming, and spot cleaning. Even with a mattress protector and dutiful cleaning, dirt, dander, dust mites, and even mold or mildew build up in your mattress. Believe it or not, your body can actually be irritated by the buildup of these particles. If you sneeze around your mattress or wake up with a stuffy nose every morning, it might be time to buy a new mattress.

Age

You have probably noticed a common theme among the signs that it might be time to buy a new mattress. The passage of time inevitably takes its toll on your mattress because it gets used every single night. Most mattresses, especially cheaper mattresses, are designed to only last 5 to 10 years. No matter how well made your mattress is, it will eventually become saggy, lumpy, uncomfortable, and dirty. If you have an old mattress that displays any of the aforementioned characteristics, it is definitely time to buy a new one.
