The Difference Between a Full and a Queen Bed

Difference Between Full & Queen

Not sure if a full size mattress or a queen size mattress is right for your next sleep upgrade? The biggest difference between a full and a queen bed is their respective sizes. A standard full size bed measures 53 inches wide by 75 inches long, while a standard queen size measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. While the queen size mattress measures larger in both length and width, both mattress sizes are popular choices in family households. The queen size remains the most popular mattress size on the market, typically used among couples and master bedrooms. The full size mattress may prove more useful to families with growing children, or single adults. In this guide, we continue to unbox the differences between these two mattress sizes to help you figure out which size is best for you.

Full Size Bed

When considering the size of a full mattress, also commonly referred to as a “double bed, the surface area falls between a twin size and a queen size mattress. The full size mattress may not be as popular as the queen due to the smaller dimensions, but it reigns in versatility. Given the dimensions of this bed, 53 inches wide by 75 inches long, the full size bed is great for single sleepers and couples who really like to snuggle. A single sleeper should have plenty of surface area to stretch out, but a couple may start to feel cramped. With 15% less surface area than a queen size mattress, a full mattress is great for guest rooms or smaller bedrooms. However, if your bedroom measures any smaller than 10 feet by 12 feet, you may want to consider a twin size or twin XL mattress. Albeit, full size mattresses are great starter mattresses for recent graduates or young adults just getting settled on their own, as the price is going to be cheaper than a queen.

Queen Size Bed

Measuring 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, the queen size mattress is without a doubt the most popular size on the market. At 5 inches wider and 7 inches longer than the full size, the queen size bed is most suitable for couples or bedrooms that measure 12 feet by 12 feet or larger. It is generally just big enough for couples to sleep without disturbing one another. However, if you or your partner stand taller than 6 feet in height, you may want to consider a king size or California King mattress if you like to sprawl out. Because the queen has more surface area than a full, you can expect the price point to be higher. Queen-sized sleep accessories, such as sheets or mattress protectors, may be more expensive than full size accessories, as well.

Two Great Options

Despite the differences in these two mattresses, the preference for one versus the other really depends on the needs and circumstances of the sleeper. If you are looking for a mattress with more space, a queen size will better suit your needs than a full, which could be great for a child’s or guest room. Anytime you consider a mattress size upgrade, think about the space in your room, how many people are sleeping on the mattress, and how much sleep space will accommodate your sleep needs. No matter your sleep needs, at BedInABox® we have six different mattress models available in both full and queen sizes to ensure we meet every preference.
