AUT & BASF Mattress Test Overview and Conclusion

There are endless claims made by memory foam mattress manufacturers and sellers about how good their mattresses are, how advanced their memory foam is and long it will last. You get claims like "lab tests show..." or "according to independent laboratories..." our question is, WHAT Labs? Where are the test results? Don't these companies think you are smart enough to understand lab tests? Do they even have them? Or are their claims just a bunch of hype?

If they claim, "Made in America", find out BY WHOM. Is it really made in America or "Assembled in America" (from cheap and possibly harmful foreign goods)?

Many of the companies which compete for business on the Internet offer warranties far exceeding the length of time they have been in business. They have come rushing in to the market to catch the wave of popularity with no intention of staying in the business or honoring any warranties. They pop up "Overnight" and are gone at the first sign of trouble or when the next new wave catches their fancy.

Almost none of the companies online back up any of the claims they make about their products.

Our BASF mattresses are created by North Carolina Foam Industries, Inc. in Mount Airy, NC (the original "Mayberry") with a track record of over 40 years in the business. BedInABox™ is their exclusive agent for the memory foam mattress we sell online.

The following test results come directly from the Leggett & Platt, Research & Development Product Testing Center. The samples were subjected to a laser surface scan. The firmness testing and pressure blanket testing ran prior to any physical testing. Surface scan and firmness testing were run incrementally during the physical aging process and after a 24-hour recovery period with the physical aging process consisting of a standardized ASTM F-1566, Juggernaut Rollator - Durability test.

The samples were also subjected to an ASTM F-1566, Cornell - Firmness Retention and Surface Deformation test. All samples were upholstered with a knit tick smooth top and mated with a build up style foundation for durability testing. Parameters listed below are guidelines for comparative analysis, no pass/fail values applicable.

LD: Pre vs. Incremental life (Rollator cycles), Pre vs. Recovery. Desirable Range: -25% to +10% change.

Sonar Scan: Pre vs. Incremental life (Rollator cycles), Pre vs. Recovery. Target value of >1" impression and/or > 10% height change. Over 1" or greater than 10% may be cause for body impression concerns.

Pressure Blanket: Comparative analysis, no criteria available at this time

Cornell: Accumulated Dimple (AD) - Desirable up to 1.75" (I/S) - 0.75" (Foam Core), Support Firmness Percentage Change (SF%C) - Desirable range of -15% to +40%.

Rollator: Observational data: Mild up to ½", Moderate ½" to 1", Large over 1" body

Firmness test - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Surface scan - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Sway force - fell within mild sway force category.
Cornell - fell within desirable parameters in accumulated dimple and outside desirable parameters in support firmness change.
Rollator - Mild surface flattening in tested area, no notable damage or observations in mattress.

Sample 2 - Advanced Urethane Technologies (AUT)- 11" mattress (3"- 4lb density, 12 ILD memory foam + 8"- 2.1lb Density, 33lb ILD Foam Core)
Firmness test - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Surface scan - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Cornell - fell within desirable parameters in accumulated dimple and outside desirable parameters in support firmness change.
Rollator - mild surface flattening in tested area, no notable damage or observations in mattress.

Sample 3 - BedInABox™ - 9" mattress (3"- 3lb density, 10 ILD memory foam + 6"- 2.4lb Density, 32lb ILD Foam Core)
Firmness test - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Surface scan - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Cornell - fell within desirable parameters in accumulated dimple and support firmness change.
Rollator - mild surface flattening in tested area, no notable damage or observations in mattress.

Sample 4 - BedInABox™ (BBL) 11" mattress (3"- 3lb density, 10 ILD memory foam + 8"- 2.1lb Density, 32lb ILD Foam Core
Firmness test - fell within desirable range in five of six incremental tests and within desirable range in recovery test.
Surface scan - fell within desirable range in all incremental and recovery tests.
Cornell - fell within desirable parameters in accumulated dimple and support firmness change.
Rollator - mild surface flattening in tested area, no notable damage or observations in mattress.

CONCLUSIONS:

Overall, the samples performed well with only slight variances from desired parameters. The firmness results indicated BBL's Sample 4, to soften and fall just outside desired parameters in one of the incremental tests and recover to within parameter after 24-hour recovery, with all the other Samples falling within desirable parameters. All the samples fell within desirable parameters in the laser surface scan testing. The Cornell testing resulted in AUT's Samples 1 & 2 to soften and fall just outside parameter in the support firmness criteria of the test with Samples 3 & 4 falling within all desirable parameters. Pressure blanket testing recorded mild pressure values in each Sample with little variance between the Samples. Rollator - durability testing showed no notable damage or observations in any of the Samples. Testing parameters are guidelines only, no pass/fail criteria is applicable.
